AYUP DUCK! Year 3 roll back the years of local area history

Year 3 had a very historical day to help support their learning about "how Stoke has changed and why our local area should be celebrated". Firstly, they started off by heading to a residential area just off the a500 where they realised that they were standing on what used to the be the Victoria Ground (the old home of Stoke City FC).

Afterwards, they headed off to the world-famous Middleport Pottery site, where they dived into the past to see how the pottery industry worked all those years ago. They looked into all the different jobs that local people had to do, they understood how important the canal system was to the industry and learnt about the general history of Middleport Pottery. All this combined has helped the children to see how important the pottery industry was and how it brought wealth to the Stoke-on-Trent area. Amazingly, the children were shown how the company still makes their unique pottery using their traditional techniques so that it can be sent all around the world....still to this day! Of course, the visit would not have been complete without getting their hands dirty so they could create their own miniature bottle kiln out of clay.

If that wasn't enough for the day, Year 3 stopped off at the Bet365 Stadium to have a look at the Sir Stanley Matthews statue to see how much of an icon he was and is still to this day for our local area.
