Class Visits

To link in with our unit on the Second World War, Year 6 visited the Brampton Museum to immerse ourselves into local history.

We learnt from the fantastic staff at Brampton that a bomb had actually fallen around Stoke-on-Trent during the war – down the road at Chesterton. We got into character as evacuee children from London and arrived in Chesterton to escape the Blitz. Whilst being introduced to our new home, we took part in many of the activities that children would have done during the war such as carol singing, hop scotch and making decorations for the house. We then visited the cinema… and the bomb dropped! We learnt about those that sadly lost their lives, including evacuee children. The war really did affect our local area! We then visited the streets of Chesterton during the war and explored the fascinating shops and what they sold. We couldn’t believe that all of these little shops sold all of those things – we’re used to Amazon Prime! We also took a crash-course in First Aid so that we could help people if they were affected by bombing in the local area. Finally, we explored lots of primary evidence such as gas masks and household appliances to keep us safe during the war. What was that noise?! The air raid siren had gone off so we headed to our shelter and passed the time by playing bingo and trying to keep our spirits up.

As ever, the fascinating (and at times very sad) information given to us was taken in with the deepest respect and sympathy for those at the time. We really learnt so much from the fantastic staff at Brampton and now we really know the effect that the Second World War had on Stoke-on-Trent. Thank you Brampton and well done Year 6 – the most amazing manners and engagement as ever!
