Reception

This half term, we are learning all about 'space'. Children will learn lots of facts about space, as well as learning about famous astronauts such as Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake. Children will also explore what they can do to look after our world, as well as discussing which healthy and unhealthy food they would like to take with them if they ever went to the moon. A Mobile Planetarium will be coming into school which will show the children what it is really like to be in space! We will be reading the story 'Whatever Next', where Baby bear goes to space in a cardboard box rocket and has a picnic on the moon. Children will be acting out this story in their roleplay area in their classrooms with their friends. In English, children will be writing a list of items that children would take to the moon, postcards from Baby bear to Mummy bear, a diary entry about Baby bear’s trip and captions/sentences based on events that take place. In Maths, we will be learning about subtraction, number ordering, money, counting in 2s and 5s, sequencing routines and familiar events and comparing lengths (i.e. shorter, longer, the same). We will also recap addition, which we looked at last half term.

In Spring term 1 our topic has a Disney theme and we are ‘Finding Nemo’. We will be finding out where Nemo might live, what it might look like and what else would live there. Children will have the opportunity to find out what it’s like to dive to the bottom of the ocean and look for Nemo in our class role play area ‘A sea cave’. We will also be exploring the book ‘The rainbow fish’ and thinking of ways to help the Rainbow fish be a better friend. The book ‘Commotion in the ocean’ will complete our topic and the children will see what else can be found on the seabed. We will put all this knowledge to the test on a trip to the aquarium to look for a real life Nemo. In Maths we will be embedding numbers to 10 and working on numbers to 20, then applying our number knowledge through addition, subtraction, doubling, halving, 1 more and 1 less.
