What better way to learn about the Stone Age than to explore a Stone Age cave at Creswell Crags!

Whilst at Creswell Crags, Year 3 explored a real Stone Age cave, discovered interesting artefacts in the museum and classified different rocks. We had a brilliant day from star to finish. At the start we went straight to the cave where we passed round animal skins, weapons and Stone Age tools. The tour guides were very impressed with our knowledge about the Palaeolithic era which we learned from our history topic ‘Would you rather live in the stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age’.

After we left the cave, we returned to the classroom where we were given a challenge. We had several different rocks and needed to sort them into three groups: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic. This was great preparation ready for our Science topic ‘What do rocks tell us about the way the Earth is made?’.

Finally, we had a terrific tour round the museum where we located some fossilised hyena poo. Not only that, but we saw some fantastic fossils from hippopotamuses that used to live in the lake at Creswell Crags. Overall, what a brilliant day out we had where we shared and learned so much knowledge!
