Year 6

During the next ten weeks, Year 6 will be journeying back to Ancient Greece to understand what the Ancient Greeks did for us. Initially, we will be connecting our local pottery industry to the Ancient Greek pottery that we will create through a range of art media. Throughout the unit, we will study key aspects of Ancient Greek culture and life: Government systems, religion and the legacy of the Olympic Game. We will be exploring democracy in-depth and how the Ancient Greeks influenced the democratic system of government that we now have in Britain. It’s not just government systems that the Ancient Greeks influenced! We will be learning about how they influenced Maths, writing systems, arts and theatre and much, much more.

Our Love of Reading text this half term will be ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief’. This will help inform our writing in English, whilst also studying different Myths and Legends.

In Science, we are excited to be learning about electricity and how it has changed over time. We will be recalling learning from Year 4 to create working circuits and build upon our knowledge to control the speed of objects, the amount of light and the pitch of sound.

Well, SATs is now over and all our hard work has not gone unnoticed. From everyone at Crescent, a huge well done for your determination, strength of character and motivation to succeed Year 6! Welcome to our third topic of the year, where we turn our eyes to the future of our planet, starting right here on our doorstep in Meir, Stoke-on-Trent. This topic is all about agency and impact: from investigating local transport and sustainability in our community to exploring the global implications of fossil fuels and climate change in Geography.

As we navigate these big questions, we will draw inspiration from the sky-high adventures of Sophie in Katherine Rundell’s Rooftoppers, exploring themes of hope and resilience that mirror our own journey toward greater independence in PSHE. All this learning culminates in a powerful mission: designing and pitching a Sustainability Plan, using our expertise in renewable energy to lead real change within our school. It is going to be a term of deep thinking, creative expression, and powerful action—we can’t wait to see what we discover!

This term, our Year 6 pupils will embark on a powerful journey back in time to explore one of the most significant events in modern history — the Second World War. Guided by our Connect and Wonder, Express and Reflect approach, children will be encouraged to make meaningful connections between the past and present, to ask big questions, and to express their learning creatively and thoughtfully.

We will begin by connecting what children already know about conflict and community to the wider causes of the Second World War. Pupils will explore the events that led to the outbreak of war, challenging the oversimplified idea that it was “Germany’s fault.” Through engaging discussions, research, and questioning, they will develop a deeper understanding of the political, social, and human factors that shaped the war.

Together, we will explore whose war it really was — was it simply England versus Germany, or a truly global conflict that affected nations and families across the world?

Children will also investigate life on the Home Front, discovering how ordinary Britons showed courage and resilience during the Blitz. They will examine the experiences of evacuees, the challenges of rationing, and the importance of community spirit. By comparing their own lives with those of children during wartime, pupils will gain empathy and a stronger appreciation for the resilience of a generation that lived through great uncertainty.

As the unit progresses, pupils will be given opportunities to express their understanding in a variety of creative and meaningful ways — through writing, drama, art, and digital storytelling. They will reflect on what they have learned about bravery, humanity, and hope in times of hardship, and consider how lessons from the past can inspire compassion and unity today.

Throughout this topic, children will think like historians: asking questions, examining evidence, and learning to see history from multiple perspectives. By the end of the unit, they will not only have developed a rich knowledge of the Second World War, but also a deeper sense of empathy, critical thinking, and appreciation for the people whose stories continue to shape our world.

Our final year of primary is an exciting journey filled with new learning and memorable experiences. In topic 1, we are exploring the big question “What is the Amazon like?” through geography, discovering its incredible wildlife, climate and importance to our planet. Alongside this, we are enjoying reading Katherine Rundell’s thrilling novel The Explorer, which links perfectly with our topic and fuels our love of reading. In science, we are learning all about how our circulatory system works and why it is so important for keeping us healthy and active. In RE, we are developing our understanding of Hindu beliefs, learning how faith and traditions shape people’s lives. We are also focusing on looking after our mental wellbeing, exploring strategies to help us feel calm, confident and ready to learn. In PE, we are building our skills in both dance and handball, enjoying creativity, teamwork and competition.

A highlight of the year will be our exciting trip to Cornwall, which is taking place this half term, where we will experience the wonder of the Eden Project, relax in the geothermal pools, and take in the spectacular sight of St Michael’s Mount. This trip will give us the chance to make lasting memories with our friends, experience new challenges and celebrate all we have achieved together in our final primary year. It is most definitely set to be a good one!
